THE YEAR SANTA STOLE THE DEVIL’S DOZEN

The  picture you see above has been the inspiration for this story.  Vaughndean Dobbs Fuller ’54 encouraged John C. Pryor to get it published on the website following their 50th Reunion.  John does things right, and he wanted names for this picture.  This caused John to seek the help from Sally Davis Dantzler ’54 and Vaughndean Dobbs Fuller for these names.  Sally solicited Linda Forrester's help and they supplied other valuable information.  The picture was taken by Bill Forrester the older brother to Donald and Linda Forrester.  As I recall, Bill and his wife were “chaperones” for this event.

It was the night before Christmas and all through the town.  Not a creature was stirring and there was no sound.  However, out east of town at the country club the Devil's Dozen was having the annual Christmas blast.  This had been for ever a custom.  Nothing is forever for this would be the last.

The Devil's Dozen was not as well thought of as the girls' Kay Club.  Somehow I think the members knew that the jig was up when they initiated their sophomore inductees two months before.  The initiation was held at the farm house of Herschal Crow out by Victory.  I cannot tell the complete story here about the initiation.  It would not be acceptable.  The members must have wanted their last one to be the best.  I will tell you the last phase of this initiation, since it drew quite a crowd.

The last phase began with the inductees having to remove all their clothing except under shorts.  They were told that they could retrieve them at the pool hall in down town Altus.  Here the naked bunch is on their some 8 mile hike to the pool hall in Altus.  What an experience that was.  We did everything you can imagine to avoid being seen.  When we finally arrived at the pool hall, our clothes were tied in knots onto saw horses in the middle of the street.  The entire student body of Altus High School had been invited to see us all come in.  They all had a good laugh.  We paid dearly for our admission to the party.  Those “Stags” you see on second row right did not have a driver’s license.  That is why they were Stag.

Needless to say, this was the last Party.  Also, there was no more Devil's Dozen.  It is interesting to note, that in this day and time, there would be no Devil’s Dozen.  Keep in mind their demise occurred in 1953.  Santa was early!
